About Mahatma Gandhi

Biography

Mahatma Gandhi was a famous champion for justice in the world. His belief in peaceful protest has been followed by other leaders including Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela.

He studied law at the University of London and was a barrister in India and South Africa. In South Africa, he experienced racial prejudice and began his civil rights work. In India he organised several non-violent protests and was put in prison. He would fast (not eat) while in prison and was released by the British. He led many successful marches and made life fairer for Indian people.

Gandhi was killed by a terrorist while at a prayer meeting. In India he is called the Father of the Nation.
